Project Update: How Did Devil’s Due Get Started?

Mothership Month begins tomorrow! We’re so excited to bring Devil’s Due to you. I thought I’d take a moment to tell you how our book got started. When the idea of releasing a bunch of new books and zines together was first pitched, Reece Carter (Scarius on the Mothership Discord) had the idea of a big collaborative book about space piracy. Drawing inspiration from the golden age of piracy back in the 1600s, the idea was to create a pirate-controlled place outside of corpo purview.

Once we had the rough ideas in place, we decided to keep working together as a collective on a profit-share system, commissioning some additional art and other help to round out the book and distribution. We split up roles based on what we each had time for, and held a number of voice chats and brainstorming over May, June, and July. Over August and September, writers put together early drafts, and we shared them amongst each other for feedback and early editing. By September, we had our first draft, some early illustrations, and a plan for launch.

Working with 20 people across the project meant that we had no shortage of amazing ideas. It’s been awesome to watch everyone’s creativity, and I think I speak for all of us when I say we’ve learned a lot from each other.

Devil’s Due crowdfunding starts tomorrow! Let’s see what we can’t do.
