Intro

Winchester Tales is a supplement for The Exorcist’s Codex™ , set in Winchester, UK, and its surrounding areas. It includes The Demonic Symphony, a large Exorcism Scenario, along with ten additional scenarios—some written as preludes or sequels, others as side missions or standalones. Together, they can be combined into a full Winchester campaign or played individually as separate cases.

The Book

The book will be released in both hardcover and PDF. The scenarios will follow the structures outlined in the Core Rulebook and the GM’s Guide for The Exorcist’s Codex, featuring a mix of Exorcism, Exploration, and Exposure cases (see below if you are unfamiliar with the system).

In addition to 10 brand new scenarios, the book expands the game world by introducing:

  • New Demonic Items with insidious powers and corrupting influence
  • New Holy Artifacts created for protection, healing, and sacred purpose
  • New Relics, each with powers and consequences that can alter the course of play
  • New Archdemons and their realms
  • A deeper look into cults and Orders
  • A broader picture of the demonic threat and the power struggles between Archdemons

Whether you want to run an extended campaign or draw on shorter scenarios to suit your group, Winchester Tales offers flexible content, new challenges, and a richer understanding of the ongoing struggle between the Orders and the demonic.

Since The Exorcist’s Codex is built on Chaosium’s BRP System, the scenarios in this book can also be run in Call of Cthulhu and other BRP-based games with small adjustments.

The Exorcist's Codex™

Art by Mohammad Yousefi

What is The Exorcist's Codex?

A historical horror RPG set in the 1890s, built on BRP. You play Agents—Exorcist, Demonologist, Order Guardian, Spiritual Medium, and others—ordinary people with training, conviction, and a plan. Different faiths and traditions stand shoulder to shoulder against the same enemy: demons and their followers. This isn’t cosmic myth; it’s grounded investigation, fieldwork, and hard choices.

Demons work through schemes, cults, and portals. They corrupt institutions, twist communities, and prepare the ground for bigger moves. Agents respond with preparation, evidence, and structured procedures. The goal is to identify what’s really happening, cut the lines that feed it, and decide how far you’re willing to go to stop it.

The Three Scenario Types

Exorcism — stop a possession or scheme at its source
Exorcism scenarios are about identifying what kind of demonic threat you’re facing and applying the correct, structured procedure to remove it. Difficulty ranges from straightforward cases to complex operations tied to an Archdemon’s broader plan. The play focus is investigation, correct identification, and careful execution.

Exploration — go out, find it, bring it home
Exploration scenarios send the team to secure lost or hidden Relics, Holy Artifacts, and Codex Fragments before cultists corrupt, destroy, or steal them. The play focus is travel, site work, documentation, and safe extraction.

Exposure — cut cult influence out of everyday life
Exposure scenarios deal with cultists, institutions, and operations in our world. The play focus is infiltration, counter-operations, and removing people or processes that feed demonic aims, or other threats.

Core Rulebook & GM’s Guide

The Core Rulebook and the GM’s Guide are available in PDF format at DriveThruRPG (and as add-ons). Physical copies can be added through this campaign (as add-ons) and will also be available at retail price in our upcoming web store (November/December).  During this campaign, they are offered at a discounted rate.

Add-ons

The Exorcist's Codex

Enhance your pledge with the core books of The Exorcist’s Codex. Available as add-ons, these volumes give you everything you need to create characters, run scenarios, and dive into the 1890s struggle against the demonic.

The Demonologist Journal

The Demonologist Journal is a digital in-world publication. The first volume has already been released, filled with contributions from backers of our previous campaign. It serves both as an official guide to the demonic—offering useful material for players and GMs—and as a collection of player-created content, full of curious, dangerous, and sometimes mundane items, people, and services.

Now we continue this tradition with The Demonologist Journal Vol. 2.

With the Vol. 2 Entry Add-on, you can step into the role of journalist, occultist, shopkeeper, historian, detective, gunsmith, medium—or any other Victorian-era voice you imagine. Submit your story, advertisement, or letter, and see it included in this immersive publication.

Guidelines for contribution:
Picture your Victorian-era readers as seekers of the hidden and the occult. What would capture their attention? What items might they long to buy? What services could you offer? Or perhaps you write a plea for help?

Additional Add-Ons

Expand your collection with previously published works from Two Starving Gnolls, all available at a reduced price. Add Pax Cthuliana, a Lovecraftian scenario set in 1920s London, and Svalbard, a chilling Lovecraftian mystery set on the remote Arctic archipelago.
