Project Update: Why Winchester?

When creating The Exorcist’s Codex, we wanted players to feel at home; not just in the real world, but also in the beliefs, myths, and legends that shape our shared imagination. Our cultural history, forged over thousands of years, provides the perfect familiar battleground between good and evil.

In Winchester Tales, the ancient city of Winchester becomes that battleground. Founded by the Romans around AD 70 as Venta Belgarum, this historic city on England’s southern shores has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, from Romans and Saxons to Vikings and Normans.

Among the historical events we draw inspiration from is the conquest of the area by King Knut the Great in AD 1016. Of course, we might have taken some creative liberties, perhaps slightly exaggerating his Norse heritage, and maybe adding an ancient Norse relic once said to be in his possession, now hidden somewhere in Winchester’s shadows.

We’ve done our best to bring the city to life for readers and players of Winchester Tales. Maps, buildings, and local names have been recreated with care and as much historical accuracy as our research allows, though we might (possibly!) have gotten a few things wrong here and there.

We truly hope you’ll enjoy this collection, and if you’d like to support it, please share the campaign with anyone who might be interested. With only four days left, your help would mean the world, and could give us a fantastic finale!

Thank you all for being part of this journey!
