Project Update: Play by Poll 3: The Hunt for the Rune-Marked Elk

Hey everyone!

I hope your weekend is off to a great start. The previous play by poll closed with decisive results - the party spends some time researching the Rune-Marked Elk's natural habitat and behavior, coming across the following passage in a tome on rare beasts:

"This majestic creature is said to reside deep in the hearts of old growth forests, and its innate magic makes it a coveted creature for study by arcanists and naturalists alike. With the males usually standing between five and six feet tall at the shoulder, the rune-marked elk’s primary feature are the glowing, blue runes that appear on their bodies. These runes tend to cluster near the shoulders and head as well as their hooves, but older males also show incredible displays of runes seemingly engraved into their massive antlers.

Unlike other elk, those marked by runes tend to be solitary creatures—only occasionally seeking each other out when driven to mate or when great dangers create a threat that can be better dealt with in numbers. While this tends to increase their rarity, it also means that hunters that come across an elk herd need spend time searching it for signs of a rune-marked elk. When unthreatened, rune-marked elk wander their forests in search of the magic-infused plants that make up the majority of their diet.

The runes that mark their bodies provide them with defenses against magic and attacks, and connect them with the primal magic of their surrounding environment allowing them to maneuver even dense forests and rocky terrain with graceful ease and giving them control over the earth itself. The antlers of male rune-marked elk have also been observed to emit flares of light on impact. As a result, their hide, heart, and hooves are of incredible use in primal rituals attuned with light and earth."

Armed with this knowledge, you find yourselves fully prepared for the hunt. Catching a male off guard, you quickly surround it and prevent it from escaping, taking care not to be trapped in the earth as its initial warning stomp threatened to knock you into newly-formed crevices and preparing for its blinding headbutts. Your hunt successful, you return to the mage who had posted the job to claim your prize.

A ranger harvests the heart of a male rune-marked elk paragon, by Quang Ho. This piece is actually what inspired me to create the rune-marked elk in the first place, so I was excited when you chose it as your first hunt!
