Project Update: Play by Poll: On Faceless Ones (and the hunt)
Hey everyone!
The last poll had a resounding answer: the party searches for books on powerful fey in a secret library!
Though it takes some time to track down, you hear tell of a library hidden on the border between the fey realm and the material plane, buried beneath an ancient oak tree said to have been planted by one of the world's first treants. Delving into that library, you find the tome you need: a book discussing fey creatures of a more monstrous nature.
According to this tome, Faceless Ones are incorporeal spirits that inhabit both the fey realm and places with a fey touch - like the foggy swamplands that lie just to the west of the library. These creatures appear with a vaguely humanoid, troll-like form with long, razor-sharp claws, and use illusory terrain and sounds to lure in prey and trick their enemies. Interestingly, silvered weapons also seem to be of particular use against these creatures - although anything else is far less effective as a result of their incorporeal nature.
From a tactical perspective, the book states that they prefer to stay at a distance, waiting for prey to enter their lair and hiding until they are close, using phantasmal strikes to inflict damage with visions and illusions. If forced into close range - or they are confident enough that they make the move themselves - Faceless Ones are able to use the most powerful tool at their disposal: their ability to steal the face and identity of their prey. This terrifying curse allows the Faceless One to share in any healing its prey would benefit from, while also passing damage it suffers back to the prey. A group preparing to hunt a Faceless One is advised to have a spellcaster on hand, ready to restore their allies with remove curse.
Prepared with this knowledge, you ready yourselves to track down a Faceless One. As you journey to the swamplands to the west, you stock up on protective magics and potions to ward against psychic effects - ensuring an easier battle as you assemble in the foggy depths of the swamp.
You first recognize that you are close when you hear a faint cry for help through the fog. Knowing that a Faceless One might be near, you ignore the cry and approach with swiftness and caution - downing your potions of resistance. Then, a wave of tormented screams wash over you as the Faceless One appears nearby. Although some among the party find themselves cursed during the ensuing fight, the spellcasters are ready, and the Faceless One has little chance to benefit from its stolen identities. Prepared as you are, you make swift work of the creature and bring a surfeit of its ectoplasm back to the city for your reward.
