Project Update: Update #7: The quiet stretch is over. Let’s catch you up

Hey there, sleepy legend.

First off—we’re really sorry. You backed us, believed in us, and deserved consistent updates… and we didn’t hold up our end. While we’ve been in the thick of fixing production issues, we let communication slip through the cracks. That’s on us, and we genuinely apologize for the silence.

Here’s what’s happening: (And this is going to be a lot of information. We will give a TLDR at the bottom)

We have made some internal changes and have our customer service team managing these updates. Since they are the pulse on our customer base we think it will improve communication and keep these updates much more consistent.

We have finalized the covers that will come with your Combo Cube Ice pillow. We have an internal shell or scrim that will keep the foam clean, protected and the layers held together. Then based on your feedback, we have moved the cooling fibers into the pillow case so that it is actually cool to the touch and will keep you cool while you are sleeping. As soon as we have photos to share, we’ll send them your way—no more radio silence.

The pillow itself is also getting a key update: we’re moving from molded to cut memory foam. Now, we get that some folks might think this is a step backward or an effort to save money but it’s not either of those things. Molded foam does have that sleek, showroom look. But after extensive testing and experience with our deluxe pillows (and more than a few faceplants into prototypes and pillows), we have found that molded foam has some major drawbacks.

First it sleeps hot because the molding process leaves a thin layer around the foam. It’s what makes it looks nice but it also stops air flow.

Second, molded pillows are much less consistent when it comes to the firmness of the foam and so we have seen more returns and lower satisfaction. We want to make sure you know what to expect every time you order a Pillow Cube pillow. We have also seen another big issue with molded pillows and that relates to how they are cured. Molded pillows are mostly made overseas, and because they aren’t cured in temperature-regulated facilities, we have seen wild swings in the firmness of the foam based on what time of year it was made. That has resulted in molded pillows that are either super soft or way too firm. Pillow Cubes depend on that perfect blend of squishy soft but supportive foam. It’s been very difficult to create consistent products.

Finally, by going with cut foam, we can source it here in the US which results in higher consistency, higher quality standards, and better raw ingredients. We are working with a new partner here in the US who is using highly automated manufacturing facilities so that we could still deliver it at an affordable price. It’s been a long process but we love how it has turned out.

Using cut foam is not about downgrading. It’s about upgrading the experience for both side and back sleepers.

Houston we have a problem…

Another huge benefit of sourcing the foam core in the US has to do with all the disruptions caused by Tariffs. As soon as the project closed last October we started working on getting the product sourced from our partner in China. As a backup we started to immediately look for a new manufacturer and found a potential partner in Vietnam. We had issues getting consistent samples and were trying to get them to fine tune the product and make it something that we would feel proud to ship. Then the world of consumer goods took a wild turn as you all know. We won’t go into too many details but although we thought things might change with China we never thought tariffs would be applied so broadly. The last couple months have been insanely challenging for our product and sourcing team to know first what world we are currently living in and second what world we will live in through the rest of the year and beyond. We have tried to keep our options open and develop several different solutions. We are excited about this new direction and know that it will give you an incredible sleeping experience.

We’ve also cooked up something new:
A fully customizable pillow system for side sleepers. You choose a 2-inch or 3-inch base with a 3-inch top layer. You also have the option to add 1” risers. This customization allows you to adjust until it feels just right. Think “Goldilocks,” but with better lumbar support. Since we’re already building this for our side-sleeping faithful, we’re rolling that customization into the Combo Cube too. Everything is done and we will be sending out photos of how it will look. It took a lot of work to make this perfect but it means that finally the Combo Cube will be available in 4 inch, 5 inch and 6 inch thicknesses. All Combo Cubes will come with the base and one of the top layers. Additional 1” risers will also be available for purchase.

The hardest part about designing and developing products is to make something that will make the highest percentage of people happy. We have tried to take in everyone’s feedback and make a product that will make as many people happy as possible.

The foam is all ready. We are just waiting for the factory overseas to finish production of the shells and cases and then we will be using air freight to get them here as soon as possible. We know people have been waiting a long time and we are working as hard as we can to get this in your hands as soon as possible.

We can’t thank you enough for your patience—and we’re sorry again for the delay. If you have questions, concerns, or just want to vent a little (fair!), our support team is here and happy to help.

Oh—and yes, the survey is still coming. For real this time.

With appreciation (and a sincere apology),
 – The Pillow Cube Team

TL;DR – Combo Cube Update

Sorry for the radio silence—we messed up and we’re fixing it. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Better Communication: Our customer service team is now handling updates for consistency.
  • Upgraded Design:
    • Cooling fibers now in the pillowcase for a real cool-to-the-touch feel.
    • Switched from molded to cut memory foam—it’s more breathable, consistent, and made in the USA (no more weird firmness issues from overseas).
    • Tariff Troubles: Tariffs on Chinese goods forced us to rethink everything. We found better U.S. partners for foam and had to pivot our global supply chain.
    • Customizable Combo Cube: You’ll now get a modular system with a 3” top + 2” or 3” base + optional 1” riser(s) = available in 4”, 5”, or 6” thicknesses. It’s like Goldilocks, but for side sleepers.
  • Status: Foam is ready. Just waiting on the outer shells and cases from overseas. Then we’ll ship them via air freight.
  • Survey: Really, truly, actually being sent.

Thanks for sticking with us—we’re working hard to deliver the pillow you deserve.
