Project Update: Here Comes the Final Boss Battle + More Gamers Trivia!
Wow, this campaign is another nail-biter!
We have three days to go and $61,000 left to raise. That's... a lot.
We need 1000 more backers at the average pledge level ($58) and The Gamers will be renewed. But here's the good news: there are more than 1000 fans following this project. Your pledges could put us across the finish line right now.
If you've been waiting on the fence, it's definitely time -- because if we don't make it by 5PM on Friday, no pledges are collected and the campaign fails.
We'll do a deeper dive at the end of this update on the factors affecting this campaign's success, for people who enjoy data.
But in the meantime, we did a test screening this Sunday, letting a couple dozen fans experience the rough cut of The Gamers: Attack of the Pwns. Here's some of what they had to say about it. (We took out spoilers.)

The same heart of all Gamers Movies. It really hit home for me and I feel will raise the stakes for the next movie. As soon as the screening finished I backed the project immediately.
[I] really enjoyed the story and acting across the board [and] every new chapter seems to bring a greater depth of both background lore and characterization. The loving parody of the first movie has not been lost - plenty of callbacks to classic tropes of the PCs, and a couple of new 'poke fun at ridiculous rules' points made with the turn-based vehicular combat especially good - but every new chunk has been more of a 'real movie' than the previous one, better writing, better acting, more depth, more emotional heart-string plucking than just parody. It's like the difference between an Old School ruleset and a modern RPG.
I enjoyed the film. I was laughing out loud at certain parts (particularly, the car chase) even without all of the effects that will be added in post-production.
A bit more serious in subject matter than the earlier episodes in this story but with just the right blend of tabletop gamer to in game character interaction humor ZOE is known for. The ending will leave you wondering how the crew will move forward and what awaits them in the final battle with the Shadow.
We're using the action on the game table far more than in the past, drawing inspiration from classic miniatures in film to help execute our elaborate car chase joke. For anyone who's been caught up in grid-based combat, these scenes should evoke the glory (and the pain) of trying to navigate strategically around an otherwise-stationary battlefield. We weren't sure how well the new approach would work, so were relieved when test screening attendees found it laugh-out-loud funny. Of particular note is that this concept was developed original on the ZOE/DG Discord server, in a big brainstorming session with the fans, so in a very real way, you all helped design the big set piece of the movie!
As the early feedback indicates, this film is also working on balancing classic Gamers humor with more serious themes. With a huge thanks to everyone who is keeping the secrets of our biggest spoilers from this episode, we knew that this was the time to explore some of the harder moments that we have all experienced around the game table:
- What happens when different players have different goals and act on them?
- How do we balance the needs of the many against the needs of the one?
- Who picks up the pieces when everything goes wrong and the game goes off the rails?
And yes, as befits the middle piece of a trilogy, we definitely leave you with a cliffhanger. We really wanted everyone to understand the stakes in The Gamers: To Be Continued, which takes place directly after Attack of the Pwns.
CAMPAIGN ANALYSIS
A few people have asked why a campaign with a comparatively modest goal would be struggling to get funding? Here's what we know.
- It's a bad time to run a campaign. There's major economic uncertainty. Not as many people can pledge.
- The campaign is designed to have more digital rewards and to be more financially accessible. That's dropped average pledge levels from $97 to $58. If we were using our normal model, we would be funded already. Adapting the campaign to global circumstances was the right choice, but it means that we need more backers to hit the same funding number.
- The signal is jammed. This campaign happened to overlap with the JQ4 surveys AND The Gamers: Dorkness Falls just ran their Kickstarter recently. It's a lot to keep track of.
- The stories following the OG Gamers aren't as broadly popular as the ones following the Dorkness characters. While this story is still an essential part of the meta-narrative, not as many people know about this story. It's a harder sell than a direct sequel to Dorkness Rising and Hands of Fate. (Humans & Households and Natural 1 faced the same hurdles.)
- We couldn't delay the campaign without risking our extra funding. We were able to keep our ask lower than usual thanks to funding assistance from Washington Filmworks, which is amazing, but we had to produce within a certain amount of time. The trade off for the extra financial help was that it put us within this window, no matter what other factors were.
We still think that we can make it, and we've done everything we can to make the campaign accessible to any Gamers fan, including offering need-based scholarships, many more digital options, and lots of transparency.
Will it be enough? That's up to you, the backers!
Here's what you can do to help as we enter the last few days:
- Get involved in community conversations on the campaign page. Chat with other fans. Share your excitement for the project with each other.
- Think about ways to reach more fans and then do some outreach. The Gamers: Hands of Fate funded because fans took the initiative to reach out to each other.
- Show your favorite Gamers films to other gamers. Help us introduce new gamers to this story!
- Get creative. You may have ideas that would never occur to us. Share, discuss, and let us know what we could be doing to reach more people!
We'd love to hear your ideas in the comments!
