The Shimazu controlled Satsuma Province in Kyushu, at the southern tip of Japan. They defeated local rivals (including the larger Otomo) to conquer the rest of the island, and then pushed back against an invasion by Hideyoshi Toyotomi. They were also the first samurai clan to use firearms, benefitting from their strong contacts with European traders and missionaries. The Shimazu survived the Tokugawa Shogunate despite lack of official favor and then played a significant role in government during the Meiji Era. Though stripped of their feudal privileges and titles by modern political reforms, the Shimazu Clan remains a formal organization to this day. Now, you can wear the sashimono of the Shimazu and revive the glory of their samurai past!
